The Gibson County Theatre Company’s new facility was featured on the front page of the Princeton Daily Clarion on Friday, February 17th, 2012. Below is the article, as found on their website.
PRINCETON – In the same month Gibson County Theatre Company benefactor Kyle Johnson opted to underwrite the cost of the 2012 performance season, the organization found a new home with a sweet rent deal from another benefactor, Tom LaGrange.
The group has headquarters at the LaGrange building at 3422 N. Prince Street after LaGrange offered discounted rent if they were willing to clean up the building.
Board member Fred Hadley said the theatre group signed a one year lease with LaGrange. They’ll use the building to store props and stage equipment, and for rehearsals.
“This makes a great workshop for us. We had a sound system put in so we can have full rehearsals in the building. LaGrange gave us a great deal. We are renting the building for one third of the market value,” said Hadley.
The theatre company was organized nine years ago. More than 300 people have been involved in numerous productions over those nine years.
Attendance for the theatre productions have grown from year to year. Hadley said when the company produced the “Sound of Music” at the high school, 1,100 people attended the shows.
“This year we are having the shows at the fairgrounds. There is limited seating capability there. The last show we produced at the fairgrounds, we sold out of tickets. We had 100-150 people there for each show.”
This is the reason the theatre group has their fingers crossed that the old theatre downtown might become their new stage in the future.
Johnson has offered to buy the building and would lease the building to the theatre company for a minimal fee.
“Our dream is to get in the old theatre. It is such an iconic building for us to be able to bring it back to life would be an honor. If they can give us a stage we can put on a show. We can add lights and sound as we go along,” said Hadley.
Hadley said members of the theatre group have been in contact with Johnson about the possibility of community theatre in the old theatre building.
“They called us to go in and give technical specifications on what it would take to turn the old theatre into a staging area for plays.
There was also a contractor who looked at the area to estimate what it would take to convert it from a movie theatre to an area that will allow us to put on a show.”
While the theatre group waits to find out about the old theatre, preparations for this season continue.
The next show, “The Foreigner,” opens at the fairgrounds activity building don March 9-10 and 11.
Tickets can be purchased at the train depot Monday through Friday 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or at the LaGrange Building during the week from 6-8 p.m.
This year’s season is called “The Season of Laughter.” Of the four productions, three are comedies and the fourth is a Christmas dinner show.
